Ingredients
Scale
Base Dough
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Toppings
- 1 cup caramel sauce
- 1 cup chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking pan to prevent sticking and ensure easy removal of the bars.
- Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, cream together the unsalted butter and brown sugar until the mixture is smooth and fluffy, which usually takes about 3 to 5 minutes.
- Add Vanilla: Beat in the vanilla extract until it is fully incorporated into the butter and sugar mixture, enhancing the flavor base of the dough.
- Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt to evenly distribute the leavening and seasoning agents.
- Mix Dry and Wet Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients into the butter mixture, stirring gently to combine until just mixed, avoiding overworking the dough to keep it tender.
- Form Bottom Layer: Spread half of the dough evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking pan, pressing gently to create a solid base layer.
- Add Caramel and Chocolate: Pour the entire cup of caramel sauce over the dough base, spreading it evenly. Then sprinkle the chocolate chips uniformly over the caramel layer.
- Top with Remaining Dough: Crumble the remaining dough over the chocolate and caramel layers, covering as much as possible to create a textured topping.
- Bake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes until the bars turn golden brown. The edges will firm up while the center remains soft and gooey.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the bars to cool completely in the pan to set before cutting into 12 squares for serving.
Notes
- Use room temperature butter for easier creaming with the brown sugar.
- If caramel sauce is too thick, warm it slightly to make pouring easier.
- For extra texture, sprinkle some chopped nuts over the caramel before adding chocolate chips.
- Store bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for extended freshness.
