Description

Christmas Crack, also known as Cracker Toffee, is a simple and delightful holiday treat featuring a crispy saltine cracker base topped with a rich, buttery toffee layer, melted chocolate, and colorful sprinkles. This easy-to-make recipe delivers the perfect combination of sweet and salty flavors, ideal for festive gatherings or holiday gift-giving.

Ingredients

Scale

Base

  • 40-48 saltine crackers (about 1 1/2 sleeves)

Toffee Layer

  • 1 cup butter (salted or unsalted, 2 sticks)
  • 1 cup packed dark brown sugar

Topping

  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips (or milk chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, or combination)
  • ½ cup sprinkles (or M&M’s, crushed candy canes, or candies of choice to decorate)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F to ensure it reaches the right temperature for baking your toffee.
  2. Prepare the Baking Tray: Line a 15″×10″ rimmed sheet pan with parchment paper or aluminum foil sprayed with cooking spray, or use a nonstick silicone baking mat to prevent sticking and ease removal later.
  3. Arrange the Crackers: Lay the saltine crackers in a single even layer inside the prepared pan. You may need to break a few crackers to fill any gaps along the edges, ensuring complete coverage.
  4. Make the Toffee: In a medium-sized pot over medium-low heat, combine the butter and dark brown sugar. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil, stirring occasionally, and cook for 3 minutes until bubbly and amber-colored. If using a candy thermometer, aim for 270°F-290°F.
  5. Pour Toffee Over Crackers: Remove the pot from heat and carefully pour the hot toffee evenly over the crackers. Quickly spread it out with a spatula to cover all crackers completely.
  6. Bake the Toffee: Place the tray in the preheated oven and bake for 3-5 minutes until the toffee mixture starts bubbling.
  7. Add and Melt Chocolate: Remove the pan from the oven and immediately scatter chocolate chips on top. Let them sit for 1-2 minutes, then spread evenly with a spatula. If the chocolate does not melt easily, return the pan to the oven for 1-2 minutes to soften before spreading.
  8. Decorate with Sprinkles: Once the chocolate is spread smoothly, sprinkle your choice of sprinkles or candies over the melted chocolate.
  9. Cool and Set: Allow the toffee to cool completely at room temperature or refrigerate for 30 minutes to 1 hour until set and hardened.
  10. Break Into Pieces: Flip the tray over to remove the toffee sheet, peel off the parchment or foil, and break the toffee into pieces by hand or cut with a sharp knife.
  11. Serve and Store: Enjoy your Christmas Crack immediately or store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • You can customize your topping with different types of chocolate chips such as milk or white chocolate, or a combination.
  • For added festive flair, use crushed candy canes, M&M’s, or other colorful candies instead of sprinkles.
  • Use parchment paper or foil with cooking spray to make removal easier and reduce cleanup.
  • Be careful when handling the hot toffee mixture as it reaches high temperatures.
  • Storing at room temperature in an airtight container helps maintain the toffee’s crispness, while refrigeration will firm it up more quickly.
