Ingredients
Scale
Danish Pastry
- 2 puff pastry sheets
- 8 oz cream cheese
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 large egg
- 1 tsp water
Blueberry Topping
- 1 1/2 cups blueberries (fresh or frozen)
- 2 tbsp water
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp cornstarch
Garnish
- Powdered sugar (optional, for dusting)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prepare for baking the danishes.
- Prepare Pastry Sheets: Unfold both puff pastry sheets and cut each into 4 equal squares to yield 8 squares total. Score a 1/2-inch border around each square and prick the centers with a fork to allow steam to escape for crispier pastry.
- Make Cream Cheese Filling: In a mixing bowl, beat together cream cheese, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy to create the filling.
- Assemble Filling on Pastry: Spoon approximately 1 tablespoon of the cream cheese filling into the center of each puff pastry square.
- Prepare Blueberry Topping: In a small saucepan, combine the blueberries, 2 tablespoons water, and lemon juice. Simmer over medium heat for 3 to 5 minutes until the blueberries soften.
- Thicken Blueberries: Stir in 1 teaspoon of cornstarch into the simmering blueberries and cook for about 1 more minute until thickened. Then set aside and let cool slightly.
- Add Blueberry Topping: Spoon about 1 tablespoon of the cooled blueberry topping over the cream cheese filling on each pastry square.
- Apply Egg Wash: Whisk the egg with 1 teaspoon of water to create an egg wash, then brush the 1/2-inch scored borders of each puff pastry square to promote golden browning during baking.
- Bake Danishes: Place the assembled pastries on the prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 18 to 20 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.
- Cool and Garnish: Allow the danishes to cool slightly after baking. Dust with powdered sugar if desired before serving for an extra touch of sweetness.
Notes
- You can use fresh or frozen blueberries depending on availability; frozen blueberries might need a little more simmering time.
- Be sure to score the pastry borders and prick the centers to allow for proper puffing and prevent dough from over-rising in the middle.
- Serve these danishes warm for the best texture and flavor experience.
- Stored in an airtight container, leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 2 days and reheated gently in an oven to maintain flakiness.
