Ingredients
Scale
Fruit Mixture
- 7 cups fresh or frozen mixed berries
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 Tablespoon cornstarch
Crisp Topping
- 2/3 cup old-fashioned oats
- 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup salted butter, melted
Instructions
- Prepare Baking Dish: Preheat your oven to 350 ยฐF (175 ยฐC) and generously grease a 7×11-inch or 9×9-inch baking dish with butter to prevent sticking.
- Mix Fruit Filling: In the prepared baking dish, combine the mixed berries, granulated sugar, lemon juice, 1/4 cup flour, and cornstarch. Gently stir with a large spoon to coat the berries evenly, ensuring the mixture is well blended. Set aside.
- Make Crisp Topping: In a large mixing bowl, combine the oats, 2/3 cup flour, both sugars, cinnamon, and salt. Stir to mix dry ingredients thoroughly. Pour the melted butter over the mixture and stir until the texture resembles wet sand with clumps forming.
- Assemble and Bake: Evenly sprinkle the oat topping over the berry mixture in the baking dish. Bake uncovered for 35 minutes, or until berries are bubbly and the topping turns golden brown. Optionally, tent foil over the crisp in the last 10 minutes to avoid excessive browning.
- Cool and Serve: Remove the crisp from the oven and let it rest for 8 minutes to thicken. Serve warm, ideally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and enjoy this comforting dessert.
Notes
- Using frozen berries is fine; no need to thaw before baking.
- For extra flavor, add a teaspoon of vanilla extract to the fruit mixture.
- Try substituting salted butter with unsalted butter plus a pinch of salt if preferred.
- To keep topping crispier, avoid stirring the crisp while hot.
- This dessert can be made ahead and reheated before serving.
