Ingredients
Scale
Dough
- 2 cups Self-Rising Flour (Can substitute with all-purpose flour plus baking powder)
- 1 cup Plain Greek Yogurt (Regular or fat-free yogurt can be used as an alternative)
Filling
- 1/2 cup Brown Sugar (Coconut sugar or a stevia blend can be used as a substitution)
- 1 tbsp Cinnamon (Adjust to taste)
- 1/4 cup Melted Butter (Coconut oil can be used for a dairy-free option)
Icing
- 1 cup Confectioners’ Sugar (Powdered erythritol can be used for a keto-friendly version)
- 2 tbsp Milk (Almond milk or any non-dairy milk can be used)
Toppings
- Food Coloring (Opt for natural food coloring or omit)
- 1 cup Sugar or Stevia (Use any granulated sweetener, adjusting for sweetness level)
Instructions
- Make the dough: In a mixing bowl, combine self-rising flour and Greek yogurt, mixing until a soft dough forms. Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead gently for 1-2 minutes until smooth.
- Roll out the dough: Using a rolling pin, flatten the dough evenly on a floured surface to about ½-inch thickness, ensuring an even layer for rolling.
- Add filling: Brush the melted butter evenly over the flattened dough, then sprinkle a mixture of cinnamon and brown sugar across the surface for a sweet, spiced flavor.
- Shape the rolls: Starting from one end, roll the dough tightly into a log shape. Cut the log into 12 equal pieces for individual cinnamon rolls.
- Prepare for baking: Arrange the cut rolls in a greased 8 x 8-inch baking dish, placing them cut side up to maintain their shape while baking.
- Bake the rolls: Preheat the oven to between 365°F and 375°F (185°C to 190°C). Bake the rolls for approximately 25 minutes, or until they turn golden brown and cooked through.
- Prepare the icing: In a small bowl, mix the confectioners’ sugar with milk until smooth and pourable, adjusting thickness if needed.
- Finish and serve: Drizzle the prepared icing over warm cinnamon rolls and sprinkle colorful homemade or natural food coloring-based sprinkles on top for a festive Mardi Gras touch. Serve immediately.
Notes
- For a dairy-free version, substitute coconut oil for melted butter and non-dairy milk for regular milk in the icing.
- If self-rising flour is not available, combine all-purpose flour with 1 1/2 tsp baking powder and 1/2 tsp salt per 2 cups flour for a substitute.
- Adjust cinnamon amount based on your taste preference for spice.
- Natural food coloring or omitting food coloring maintains a more natural approach without artificial dyes.
- This dough uses no yeast, making it a quick and easy recipe without rising time.
