Ingredients
Scale
Sausage Gravy Ingredients
- 1 pound bulk ground pork breakfast sausage (mild or hot)
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 to 2 1/2 cups milk
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Brown the Sausage: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, crumble and brown the sausage thoroughly. Allow it to get nicely browned to develop flavor. Do not drain the grease after cooking as it is essential for the gravy.
- Add the Flour: Sprinkle the all-purpose flour evenly over the browned sausage and stir well. Cook the mixture for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring constantly to eliminate raw flour taste.
- Incorporate Milk and Season: Gradually pour in the milk, stirring continuously after each addition to prevent lumps. Reduce the heat to a simmer and allow the gravy to thicken while stirring frequently. Adjust thickness by using 2 cups of milk for thicker gravy or up to 2 1/2 cups for a thinner consistency. Season generously with salt and black pepper to taste. Serve the gravy hot, ideally over freshly baked biscuits.
Notes
- Using the grease from the sausage adds rich flavor to the gravy, so do not drain it off.
- For a spicier gravy, opt for hot breakfast sausage or add additional black pepper.
- The gravy thickens as it cools, so serve immediately for best texture.
- If the gravy becomes too thick, stir in a little more milk to reach desired consistency.
- Serve with warm biscuits for a traditional Southern dish.
