Description

This Homemade Peach Chutney is a sweet and tangy condiment made from fresh peaches, dried fruits, and a blend of warm spices, simmered and thickened with fruit pectin. Perfect as a versatile topping or dip, it complements pork, ham, chicken, or turkey beautifully.

Ingredients

Scale

Fresh Produce

  • 4 cups fresh peaches, peeled and diced (about 67 peaches)
  • 1/3 cup sweet onion, diced
  • 3/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice

Dried Fruit

  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries
  • 1 jar McCormick crystallized ginger (about 2 oz or 1/4 cup chopped)

Spices & Seasonings

  • 1 tablespoon sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

Sugars & Thickener

  • 7 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 pouch Certo liquid fruit pectin

Instructions

  1. Prepare the peaches: Peel and dice fresh peaches to measure about 4 cups (approximately 6 to 7 peaches). Set aside for use in the chutney.
  2. Combine ingredients: In a large pot, add diced peaches, apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, raisins, dried cranberries, diced sweet onion, chopped crystallized ginger, sea salt, allspice, ground cinnamon, ground cloves, ground ginger, and granulated sugar. Do not add the pectin yet.
  3. Cook the chutney: Place the pot over medium heat and bring the mixture to a rolling boil, stirring often to prevent sticking or scorching. Once boiling, continue to stir constantly for one full minute to ensure even cooking.
  4. Add pectin: Remove the pot from heat immediately and stir in the Certo liquid fruit pectin. Stir continuously for about 5 minutes while the chutney cools slightly; this step is crucial for proper thickening.
  5. Serve or store: Allow chutney to reach room temperature before serving. It can be used as a topping for pork, ham, chicken, or turkey, or as a dip or sandwich spread.
  6. Storage: Transfer the chutney into airtight containers. Store refrigerated for up to 2 weeks or freeze for up to 4 months in a freezer-safe container. When ready to use, thaw overnight in the refrigerator and remove from fridge about 30 minutes prior to serving for best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Ensure constant stirring during boiling to prevent burning and achieve even cooking.
  • Do not add pectin until the cooking is completed and the pot is removed from heat to ensure proper thickening.
  • If you prefer a less sweet chutney, you can reduce sugar by up to 1 cup but keep in mind it may affect preservation and thickness.
  • Peel peaches carefully to avoid bitterness from the skin while maintaining texture.
  • Use airtight containers for storage to preserve freshness and prevent contamination.
  • Cooling chutney slightly before adding pectin helps achieve the right consistency.
