Ingredients
Scale
Meat Sauce
- 1 lb ground Italian sausage (or ground beef)
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup pizza sauce
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
Casserole Layers
- 1 bag (32 oz) frozen tater tots
- 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup mini pepperoni slices
- 1/4 cup black olives, sliced (optional)
- 1/4 cup green bell pepper, diced (optional)
- 1/4 cup mushrooms, sliced (optional)
Garnish
- Fresh basil or parsley for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the casserole.
- Cook the sausage: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground Italian sausage until it is fully browned, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain any excess grease to keep the dish from being too oily.
- Sauté aromatics: Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the sausage. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the onions are tender and the garlic is fragrant.
- Add sauce and seasoning: Stir in the pizza sauce, Italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes if using. Let the mixture simmer gently for 2-3 minutes to meld the flavors.
- Prepare the baking dish: Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking. Spread half of the frozen tater tots evenly on the bottom of the dish.
- Layer meat mixture and cheese: Pour the cooked sausage and sauce mixture over the tater tots. Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese evenly on top.
- Add remaining layers: Layer the remaining tater tots over the cheese, then sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese and the remaining mozzarella cheese.
- Add toppings: Scatter the mini pepperoni slices, black olives, diced green bell pepper, and sliced mushrooms evenly over the top.
- Bake: Place the dish uncovered in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and the tater tots are crispy and golden brown.
- Garnish and serve: Remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool slightly. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley before serving to add a fresh herbal touch.
Notes
- You can substitute ground beef or turkey for the Italian sausage if preferred.
- Feel free to add or omit vegetables such as olives, bell peppers, or mushrooms based on your taste.
- For a spicier version, increase the amount of red pepper flakes or add sliced jalapeños.
- To make this dish vegetarian, omit the sausage and pepperoni and add more veggies or plant-based meat alternatives.
- Leftover casserole can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven or microwave.
