Description

This Puff Pastry Apple Tart is a delightful and easy-to-make dessert featuring thinly sliced apples seasoned with warm spices atop a flaky puff pastry crust. Perfectly baked until golden and puffed, the tart is finished with a drizzle of honey for a luscious sweetness, making it an elegant treat for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

Fruit Mixture

  • 3 small/medium apples, peeled and thinly sliced
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of sea salt

Dough & Toppings

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 3 tablespoons melted butter, divided
  • 2 tablespoons honey (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to ensure it reaches the proper temperature for baking the tart.
  2. Prepare Apple Mixture: Peel and slice the apples very thinly. In a small bowl, combine the sliced apples with 2 tablespoons of melted butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and a pinch of sea salt. Toss gently to coat the apples evenly with the spice mixture.
  3. Prepare Puff Pastry Base: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Lay the thawed puff pastry sheet flat on the parchment. Using a sharp knife, score a border about one inch from the edge of the pastry—make a shallow cut that doesn’t go all the way through to help the edges puff up while baking and contain the apple juices.
  4. Dock the Pastry: Use a fork to poke holes (dock) in the center area of the puff pastry inside the scored border. This step prevents the center from puffing too much. Brush the pastry border with the remaining 1 tablespoon of melted butter for a rich golden finish.
  5. Arrange Apples on Pastry: Neatly arrange the apple slices over the center of the puff pastry inside the scored border. You can do this in rows or any decorative pattern you prefer.
  6. Bake the Tart: Place the tart in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 20 minutes or until the edges are puffed and golden brown. Begin checking around 15 minutes and then every 2 minutes to avoid overbaking.
  7. Glaze with Honey: Remove the tart from the oven and, while still warm, gently brush the apple tops with honey to add shine and extra sweetness. If needed, warm the honey in the microwave for about 15 seconds to make brushing easier.
  8. Cool and Serve: Allow the tart to cool for several minutes before slicing and serving to let the juices settle and the pastry firm up slightly.

Notes

  • Thinly slicing the apples ensures even cooking and a tender texture.
  • Using a sharp knife to score the pastry and docking prevents unwanted puffing and juice leakage.
  • Honey glaze is optional but adds a lovely shine and extra flavor.
  • Serve the tart slightly warm or at room temperature, optionally with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
