Description

A quick and flavorful recipe for blackened shrimp seasoned with a blend of spices and cooked in a skillet, perfect for a delicious 15-minute meal. This dish offers a spicy Cajun-inspired taste and pairs wonderfully with a creamy remoulade sauce.

Ingredients

Scale

Shrimp and Seasoning

  • 1 pound raw shrimp (peeled and deveined)
  • 1 clove garlic (minced)
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder

Cooking

  • 1-2 tablespoons olive oil

Optional Sauce

  • Remoulade sauce (made with mayonnaise, whole grain mustard, capers, horseradish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the seasoning mix: In a mixing bowl, combine minced garlic, paprika, Cajun seasoning, salt, cayenne pepper, cumin, thyme, black pepper, and onion powder to create a flavorful blackening spice blend.
  2. Coat the shrimp: Add the peeled and deveined shrimp to the bowl with the seasoning mixture, tossing thoroughly until each shrimp is evenly coated with the spices for maximum flavor.
  3. Heat the skillet: Place a skillet over medium-high heat and add 1 to 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Allow the oil to heat until shimmering, which ensures a proper sear.
  4. Cook the shrimp: Add the seasoned shrimp to the hot skillet in a single layer. Cook for about 2 to 3 minutes on one side without moving them to develop a charred crust, then flip and cook another 2 to 3 minutes until shrimp turn pink, opaque, and are cooked through.
  5. Serve immediately: Transfer the cooked blackened shrimp to a serving dish and offer remoulade sauce on the side for dipping or pouring, enhancing the spicy flavors with creamy, tangy notes.

Notes

  • Be careful not to overcrowd the pan as it will steam the shrimp instead of blackening them.
  • Adjust cayenne pepper quantity to control the spice level.
  • Shrimp cook very quickly; avoid overcooking to keep them tender and juicy.
  • Remoulade sauce can be made ahead and refrigerated for better flavor melding.
