Description

A delicious and hearty breakfast pizza featuring a flaky crescent roll crust topped with savory sausage gravy and melted cheddar and mozzarella cheeses. Perfect for a crowd, this dish combines classic Southern sausage gravy flavors with the convenience of a pizza, making it an ideal breakfast or brunch option.

Ingredients

Scale

Crust

  • 1 can (8 oz) refrigerated crescent roll dough

Sausage Gravy

  • 0.5 pound ground breakfast sausage
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 0.75 cup whole milk
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper

Toppings

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 0.5 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Chopped fresh parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare crust: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or sheet pan. Unroll crescent roll dough and press it into the dish, sealing the seams to form the crust. Bake for 8 minutes until lightly golden.
  2. Cook sausage: While the crust bakes, cook the ground breakfast sausage in a skillet over medium heat until browned and crumbled. Do not drain the grease, as it’s needed for the gravy.
  3. Make sausage gravy: Sprinkle the all-purpose flour over the cooked sausage and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly to incorporate the flour. Slowly whisk in the whole milk, stirring continuously until the gravy thickens, about 3 to 5 minutes. Season with black pepper to taste.
  4. Assemble pizza: Spread the hot sausage gravy evenly over the pre-baked crescent roll crust, ensuring a uniform layer.
  5. Add cheeses: Sprinkle shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheeses evenly over the sausage gravy layer.
  6. Bake until bubbly: Return the assembled pizza to the oven and bake for an additional 8 to 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and slightly golden.
  7. Garnish and serve: Remove from oven, garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired. Let the pizza cool slightly, then slice into 12 squares and serve warm.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the sausage while cooking.
  • Use low-fat milk if you prefer a lighter gravy.
  • Fresh herbs like thyme or chives can be sprinkled on top for extra flavor.
  • Leftover pizza can be reheated in the oven or microwave.
  • If crescent roll dough is not available, puff pastry or biscuit dough can be used as substitutes.
