Ingredients
Scale
Chicken
- 1 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
Teriyaki Sauce
- 1/2 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/4 cup honey
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- 1 tablespoon minced ginger
Thickener
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons water
Garnish
- Sliced green onions
- Sesame seeds
Instructions
- Heat the Skillet: In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium-high heat until hot enough for cooking.
- Cook the Chicken: Season the bite-sized chicken pieces with salt and pepper to taste. Add them to the heated skillet and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are browned on all sides and cooked through, approximately 6-8 minutes.
- Prepare Teriyaki Sauce: While the chicken is cooking, in a medium bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup soy sauce, 1/4 cup water, 1/4 cup honey, 2 tablespoons brown sugar, 1 tablespoon rice vinegar, 1 tablespoon minced garlic, and 1 tablespoon minced ginger until fully combined.
- Create Cornstarch Slurry: In a small bowl, mix 1 tablespoon cornstarch with 2 tablespoons water to form a smooth slurry. Add this slurry to the teriyaki sauce mixture and stir well to incorporate.
- Add Sauce to Chicken: Pour the prepared teriyaki sauce into the skillet with the cooked chicken. Stir thoroughly to evenly coat all the chicken pieces with the sauce.
- Simmer and Thicken: Reduce the heat to low and let the chicken and sauce simmer together for 2-3 minutes. This allows the sauce to thicken and develop a glossy finish.
- Garnish and Serve: Remove the skillet from heat. Transfer the teriyaki chicken to a serving dish. Sprinkle sliced green onions and sesame seeds on top for added flavor and presentation.
- Serving Suggestion: Serve the teriyaki chicken hot alongside steamed rice or your preferred vegetables for a complete meal.
Notes
- For a deeper flavor, marinate the chicken in the sauce mixture for 15-30 minutes before cooking.
- If you prefer a thicker sauce, increase the cornstarch slurry quantity slightly.
- Substitute honey with maple syrup or brown sugar only if you want a vegan alternative.
- Use low-sodium soy sauce to reduce sodium content.
- Make sure not to overcook the chicken to keep it tender and juicy.
